That’s what they call 16‐year‐old Robin Packalen.
There are so many dreams and expectations packed into that expression. Not only Robin’s own, but his young fans’. And obviously, a lot of faith by music business professionals. Success stories like this come very rarely.
Robin’s rise has been phenomenal: his debut single Frontside Ollie (2012) has been seen more than 12 million times on YouTube and the total amount of YouTube views for this official videos is now more than 60 million – in a country with a population of only 5 million people.
Along with the YouTube phenomenon came a plethora of awards: four Emma’s (local Grammy) 2012, MTV / EMA Award 2012, the Most Googled Person in Finland 2012 and 2013, three multiplatinum albums, double platinum dvd,, etc.
Before Robin Packalen has had his 16th birthday, his cd’s and dvd’s have sold more than 380 000 physical copies in Finland. Robin has peaked on all possible charts in Finland and stayed on the top of the charts for months. 2012 also saw him star in a full length theatrical film Robin The Movie. Right now he is busy recording his fourth studio album, which he wrote with Finland’s sharpest songwriters and producers.
Before the summer of 2014 Robin considered the show he did in December 2012 at Helsinki’s biggest arena, the 15.000 capacity Hartwall Arena as a highlight of his career. In 2012 – 2014 he has performed Finland for over 200.000 people and done four shows in Oslo and Helsinki opening for Justin Bieber in 2013 (total audience 80.000). On July 9th, 2014 Robin was the first ever Finnish solo artist to perform in the 40.000 capacity Olympic Stadium in Helsinki.
And even though the young audience sometimes display hysteria common to Justin Bieber’s gigs, Robin tends to be a lot more down to earth than Bieber. Biebermeister is not one of his idols.
“I’ve never really had any idols”, he says. “Although one band that I’ve listened all my life is The Rasmus. International favourites change on weekly basis, sometimes daily. Lately I’ve listened to Thirty Seconds to Mars, them I really like. And Adam Lambert, as his voice is chillingly good.”
Robin exudes a combination of openness and confidence which makes him seem very down to earth. Friends, family and people around him help him stay grounded, he explains.
“And of course hobbies. This is a hobby for me. I don’t consider music work.
School is my number one work at the moment. When my friends go to their ice hockey practice, I travel all around Finland and do this”, Robin says and smiles winningly. One of his future goals is to write and produce all songs on his albums by himself.
